| Thursday We woke up and milled around a bit and then motor sailed 4 miles to another anchorage. Brandi and I threw on some snorkel gear and jumped in the water. We saw a huge stingray and I collected some oysters of the rocks. We ate oysters and a fritatta that Melinda made for lunch and then headed off for Tutukaka where the boat will remain until the end of hurricane season. Happy Thanksgiving! We ate Pizza and Mussels and Seafood chowder before we retired for the night. Friday Woke up. Tidied the boat and covered the sails. Chris arrived around 2pm and took Melinda to the airport. Brandi stayed until her ride appeared at 9ish. He seemed like a good adventure loving kiwi bloke. Saturday It rained all day. A lanyard that ran up the main mast must have snapped in the wind. I went up the mast to secure it. I did my laundry and ate too much food. I made cabbage, potatoes, and barley for dinner and watched heroes. Sunday It's sunny and I woke up at 7. I should get down to Whangarei today to get some groceries and blank CDs. Monday I kept waking up to before my alarm with a deep breath and a frantic look at the clock. 8am class was early but not too early. I managed to get to the shower and brush my teeth but I didn't have time to stuff my booze hole full of food. Class was mostly watching films and skimming a book to fill in the rest of the answers. Our teacher, Michele, was pretty laid back and cool which helped put me at ease. I brought chocolate which put me on her good side. Tuesday After another morning of clock staring we left Tutukaka at 8:30 am and drove into Whangarei to the public pool. We put on our wet suits and stood around for a half an hour talking about what was going to happen next. I overheated and was about to freak out right before we actually got into the 29C water. We had 14mm suits on and it was hot all day. The water was shallow, We were confined to one lane in a pool. The whole situation was cramped and it was uncomfortable breathing through a respirator. Water kept getting into my face mask and going up my nose. I kept thinking about how learning experiences are usually uncomfortable and hurt my brain or body but I am unaccustomed to experiences where something as precious as my breath is constantly in danger of being blanked away from me. Keith arrived after I returned to Tutukaka and we ate at an expensive restaurant with a cute waitress. We talked about "the future" and I worried about the running motor on the boat. He checked into the backpackers and we went for a beer Johan and Silvan, my German and French classmates. The batteries read 99% but I'm definitely sleepy. |
